In May this year, the Lesedi team at the Ankerlig Transmission Koeberg Second Supply (ATKSS) project reached an incredible safety milestone: 2 years and 1 million man-hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI).
To mark this achievement, Lesedi and Eskom hosted a celebratory event on site to recognise the people behind the success. The event was attended by senior leadership from both Eskom Koeberg and Lesedi, highlighting the strength of the partnership and the shared commitment to safety.
During the event, Eskom’s Chief Nuclear Officer, Velaphi Ntuli, addressed the team, praising their efforts and encouraging them to stay focused:
“My challenge for you now is to finish this project without hurting anyone. It’s a critical project for Koeberg, but no deadline is worth someone’s safety. Take the time to do the work safely.”
Employees and subcontractors who went above and beyond were recognised for their contributions to the milestone, a proud moment for all involved.
Eskom Safety Manager, Godfrey Gumbi, also highlighted the leadership and consistency that made this possible:
“This didn’t happen by chance. It took strong leadership from Lesedi’s Project Manager, Alton Jones, who made it clear from the start that safety comes first. Lesedi took the lead on behaviour-based safety and weekly reporting, and they never disappointed.”

This milestone is a true reflection of the dedication, awareness, and teamwork shown by every person on site. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who played a part in this success.
Eskom’s Chief Nuclear Officer, Velaphi Ntuli, commended the team on achieving this significant milestone and encouraged them to maintain their high safety standards.
“My challenge for you now is to finish this project without hurting anyone. It is important to get this project done; we really need this to support the operations at Koeberg. As much as it is important and urgent, it is not urgent enough to hurt anybody. Take the time to do the work safely,” he added.
This milestone reflects the hard work and commitment to safety shown by everyone on site. We are truly grateful to all the teams, partners, and individuals who made this achievement possible.
Safety Manager of Eskom, Godfrey Gumbi, congratulated everyone who made the milestone possible. “This did not happen by chance; it took strong leadership from the Lesedi Project Manager, Alton Jones, who said he did not want to see an ambulance entering the site. When it comes to consistency and hazards Identification, which is part of our behavior-based safety, we gave Lesedi as a principal contractor to spearhead running with it and filter it to the subcontractors and report to us every week. They never disappointed,” he added.
