CEO Leon Van Wyk’s Remarks at Africa Energy Indaba: Addressing Decarbonisation Challenges
At the Africa Green Economy Summit, Lesedi CEO Leon Van Wyk participated in a pre-event masterclass panel discussion, where he shared valuable insights on the challenges of decarbonisation and capitalising on carbon investment opportunities.
Van Wyk discussed the balance between environmental goals and business needs, stating, “We are trying to balance what is right for the environment and what makes sense for the business.” He highlighted that while Lesedi does not directly engage in carbon market-related projects, it focuses on decarbonisation solutions for end users. However, securing funding for these projects remains a significant challenge.
The CEO stressed that large-scale decarbonisation efforts require substantial investment in engineering and development, which can be costly.
“Getting funding for these kinds of projects is extremely difficult, ”he remarked, emphasizing that financial models from funding institutions need to adapt to support the unique nature of these initiatives.
Van Wyk also noted that many companies are focusing more on decarbonising their operations rather than investing in carbon markets due to competing financial priorities. He concluded by stressing the importance of making development funding more accessible to ensure the success of decarbonisation projects.
His remarks underscore the importance of financial support in advancing sustainability goals and driving forward decarbonisation initiatives across the industry.
