Koeberg Fire Detection System Replacement (JDT Project) 01/2019
Lesedi, together with its foreign consortium partner, DEF (La Détection Electronique Français) have worked on the JDT Fire detection system project to replace the existing fire detection system with a new system in the reactor building. The project commenced in June 2016 and has had in excess of 100 people working on the project (this included Lesedi, DEF, and our subcontractor teams).
The complete installation was led by Lesedi with local subcontractors also playing a key role in the execution of the project. These subcontractors included: Koebec (electrical scope), RHM (mechanical scope) ,and Southey (scaffolding). The commissioning of the new system was performed by DEF with Lesedi’s support.
The JDT project included the Design, Installation and Commissioning of the new Fire Detection System (JDT) for the reactor buildings (Unit 1 and Unit 2). To better manage the project’s implementation, the project was split into two portions:
- Online Implementation (Non-Intrusive).
- Outage Implementation (Installation of the new system inside the Reactor Building and removal of the existing system).
The JDT Installation took place in the following areas:
- Reactor building from the -3m to 20m level
- Electrical building on the 3.8m, 7m, 11.5m, 15m & 19m level
- Fire Station
- Unit Control Rooms
- Simulator
The Key dates and milestones for the project were:
- Submission of Acceptable Scheme Design – MET
- Submission of Acceptable Detailed Design – MET
- Material on Site – MET
DEF as the OEM was integral in the Design phase of the project, working with the Lesedi designers and providing
insight into how their fire detection equipment and system (as a whole) functions. During the implementation phase (both Unit 1 & 2) their site team commissioned the new JDT system with assistance from Lesedi. The teamwork on the project was of an exceptional level. All that remains is the End of Intervention Report (EIR) for Unit 2.
- Unit 1 Implementation Complete – MET
- Unit 2 Implementation Complete
- Remainder of the Work Complete – Projected to complete end of January 2019
